Organization Overview
The NYPA Robotics Program, officially launched in July 2023, was built to reduce risk, enhance infrastructure visibility, and modernize field operations across transmission, generation, canals, and security. By integrating advanced drones, ground robotics, and AI-based inspection workflows, the program drives safer, more efficient, and data-rich utility operations.
In just two years, the program has grown rapidly—training over 100 FAA-certified pilots, implementing FAA-approved BVLOS & Remote operations, and deploying remote missions from centralized control rooms. We have deployed digital tools like Mission Manager, to ensure safe and compliant flight operations, and MediaHub, our in-house data library that stores thousands of inspection images for internal analysis and regulatory support.
The program executes over 1,500 missions annually, supporting asset inspections, environmental monitoring, public relations, and emergency response. We prioritize workforce inclusion—ensuring both union and management teams have access to robotics tools and training. Robotics are not a replacement, but an extension of our people.
With a strong focus on compliance, safety, and innovation, NYPA’s Robotics Program is setting the national standard for how public utilities scale robotics responsibly, aligning future-ready technology with frontline expertise. Through continued STEM outreach, partnerships, and strategic investment, we are future-proofing our infrastructure—one mission at a time.
